Color Bred Canaries

Red Orange, Apricot & Rose

About Us

Hello and thank you for your interest in our birds. We are strictly hobby breeders and do not try to produce large numbers of birds. In fact we now limit our breeding pairs to one clutch per year each. Left to their own resources each pair would produce 2 or 3 clutches every year. The photo below is of some of the hens in our breeding program.

Four Hens

Our breeding pairs are housed in double Higgins RB 50 “Super Breeder” cages. This gives them a cage that is 38 inches wide, 13 inches high and 13 inches deep. The big advantage to this arrangement is that the perches can be set 28 inches apart which means that they have to fly from perch to perch rather than hop. In our view this exercise is important, as canaries need to fly in order to remain healthy. The other big advantage to the double cage is that it can be divided into two if it ever becomes necessary to separate the babies from the parents.

A color bred canary requires color food when it is moulting in order to maintain it’s feather color. We currently use carophyll red for this purpose. This is a synthetic form of astaxanthin which is the substance that flamingos consume to maintain their deep red color. In the wild flamingos get their astaxanthin by eating large quantities of fresh shrimp.

We do not show our birds but our breeding stock were all "show quality" and were obtained from a breeder who did show very successfully in this area. These were not his culls but rather were his best birds that were for sale because he was retiring.

We are located in White Rock, BC about 50 k south of Vancouver, near the Canada-US border (Peace Arch Crossing). All our birds are housed indoors and have never had any contact with wild birds.
