Books

cover Barron's Canaries (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)
by Otto Von Frisch. The best book for beginners that is readily available. For more information please click on the title or the photo of the cover.

Von Frisch includes many helpful hints including what to do if your free-flying canary shows no inclination to return to his cage after you let him out, as well as how to create "favorite spots" for the birds to use while outside the cage. Free-flying is something I have never done with any of my canaries but the idea of giving your birds more exercise than they could get in a small cage has considerable merit. However, before you try this you should read Von Frisch's book to learn how to danger proof your home.

cover Colored, Type & Song Canaries
by G.B.R. Walker with Photos by Dennis Avon. Considered by many to be the best book ever written on canaries. For more information please click on the title or the photo of the cover.

Finally, Walker's book has been reprinted! This is THE book that serious canary breeders search antique bookstores and online auctions for. Everything you've ever wanted to know about care of canaries, genetics (this is the BIG benefit to Walker's book) and breeding, showing, and varieties. Avon does a fantastic job with photography and capturing the colors and conformation of the different varieties. Walker has updated some of the information since the original printing. He has also added a section on song canaries and obviously did a lot of research on Rollers and American Singers.

We are working on developing pages on canary management and breeding but until they are ready I recommend visiting A Place For Canaries for information.
