a beginner's guide to information security

High-Speed.Connections

The Internet has become an integral part of daily life. Unfortunately, while many people have come to rely on it, most have little or no understanding of how the Internet works. This can pose serious problems, particularly as issues around information security become more common and more serious.

The advent of high-speed connections to the Internet has greatly increased the security threats because these connections are always on. Without certain security measures, a computer that is hooked up to the Internet is like an open door. As long as the connection is maintained, information can flow in and out of the computer almost unchecked. This means that as long as the connection to the Internet is on, people who are prowling the Internet can gain access to computers that are logged on to the Internet.

Furthermore, because always on connections maintain a static IP address, once a potential attacker identifies an always-on connection, he or she will know where to find it in the future in order to attack the computer.

However, these concerns should not discourage you from using high-speed connections. Rather, with some knowledge, effort and on-going vigilance, you can adequately protect yourself, without expending a lot of time or money.

Complex.Software

As the complexity of information systems increases, security decreases. For example, e-mail viruses play upon the "ease of use" features found in many software products. Such software is very complex and is prone to bugs and security weaknesses. Outlook Express seems to be particularly prone to bugs and security weaknesses.

I recommend using Eudora for email but if you use Outlook Express you should follow these Best Practices for Outlook Express to minimize your exposure to Virus attacks.

If you decide to use Eudora it is worth your time to check your settings, and to take extra precautions when it comes to attachments. In addition you should make sure you have downloaded the latest security patches from Microsoft for your version of Windows.

Security.Solutions

I recommend that every business have at least a basic security assessment done once a year. This will show you how to increase your security level, often without any further financial investment.
