Top 10 Terrier Sites

OUR FAVORITES

Jack Russell Terrier Club of America

A very comprehensive site, includes great pictures, the history of the breed, the characteristics, the breed standard, medical information, information on trials (including conformation, agility, go-to-ground, obedience and racing), training tips, stories about the breed, a quiz and a chat room.

The site provides a very objective assessment of the pros and cons of getting a Jack Russell. Anyone considering a Terrier for the first time would be well advised to read the Bad Dog section since it applies to all Terriers to some degree.

Border Terrier Club of America

Club activities, events, regional club contacts, breed information, FAQs, books, grooming help, rescue contacts and pictures. On line booklet "The Border Terrier in Brief" including a chapter on "Why a Border is not for Everyone".

Rose Croft Cairn Terriers

Jerrie Wolfe, a Cairn Terrier breeder, has created a very impressive site which has great pictures of some of the dogs she has bred. The site contains a tremendous amount of information about Cairns and at the same time is very entertaining.

"Learn how to find a responsible breeder, how to raise puppies with great temperaments, that Cairns change colors over the years, health concerns, history of the breed, other fun things to do with your Cairn besides the show ring, behavior problems and their solutions, other Cairn Terrier links from around the world, a list of books, breeder referral, rescue, Cairns in the movies, and the??Whippets?? that live here too. And a little bit about me and my start in dogs."

Airedale Terriers by Cathy Dowd

"Among the mine pits of the Aire, the various groups of miners each sought to develop a dog which could outfight and outhunt and OUTTHINK the other miner's dog. Out of the experiments emerged the modern Airedale. He is swift, formidable, graceful, big of brain, an ideal chum and guard. There is almost nothing he cannot be taught if his trainer has the slightest gift of teaching. Every inch of him is in use. No flabby by products. A PERFECT MACHINE - a machine with a BRAIN, PLUS."

An excellent and very complete source of information on Airedales by Cathy Dowd. Includes information on the history, description, care and training of Airedales as well as information on health issues, hunting and working activities and a list of Airedale books. In addition there are links to Faqs entitled Your New Puppy, Your New Dog, and Canine Hip Dysplasia. If you are interested in Airedales visit this site!

Galina's Raysend Airedales

A Russian site featuring Russian show results with many pictures, Airefashion (Airedales dressed in various costumes), the Fancy Airedale magazine, a love story involving two Airedales, and pictures of their puppies growing up.

A wonderful site, the pictures alone make it worth visiting.

Be sure to check out the "Fancy Fur Kennel" (stuffed terriers handmade by Galina) and the "Aire-Fashion" photos.

Trailview Sealyham Terriers

"The Sealyham Terrier is a short legged, powerful terrier weighing in at about 20-26 pounds. They have a soft undercoat and harsh weather resistant outer coat. The overall color is white, although head markings of lemon, tan or badger color are permitted. They are an intelligent dog and of quite a sensitive nature, although they also have the stubbornness and tenacity of a terrier. The Sealyham can be quite inventive in their daily play and activities, keeping their owners challenged and on their toes. They are definitely people oriented dogs and are most happy when they can spend time with their owners. We don't think you will find a more devoted companion!"

Brad and Christine Hawley have created a very impressive site which chronicles their experiences in breeding and showing Sealyhams. The site also provides information on the history of the breed (with pictures), advice on puppies and older dogs, grooming advice, links to other Sealyham sites and lots of great pictures.

British Manchester Terrier Club

This page provides club news and events; UK rescue information; extensive breed information including grooming, exercise, health and training; origins and breed history; and links dealing with Manchester Terriers.

"Manchesters are true terriers. This manifests itself in several ways. With typical terrier spirit they do not allow an insult or threat go by unanswered. If they perceive a threat to themselves, their home or family, a typical Manchester makes it perfectly clear it is ready and willing to take action."

"They will also, given just a fleeting glance of a rat or rabbit, direct all their considerable intelligence and ability to disposing of the animal they see as prey."

"Manchesters have an appetite for living life to the full, always ready to share a walk or a game with their owner. A typical adult is much like a four or five year old child. Often stubborn or wilful, playful and mischievous."

Glen of Imaal Terriers

"There is evidence that the Glen of Imaal Terrier is a centuries old breed, but it has not been well known even in its native country. It originated in a place called the Glen of Imaal in County Wicklow, Ireland."

"Serving as all around farm dogs, to guard and work livestock, to eradicate vermin, to hunt fox, badger, otter, mink, and so on, these earth dogs (terriers) were also used in kitchen treadmills to turn spits and churns, and in dog fighting. "

"The Glen has kept its qualities of versatility, intelligence, and ruggedness. It is a very tough and fearless dog, and before the badger trials were outlawed in Ireland in 1966, the Glen was required to earn its "Teastas Misneach," or Dead Game Certificate, in order to win a Championship. This meant silently drawing a badger from its den within a specified time."

A very enjoyable site dealing with a little known terrier.

Kerry Blue Terrier by Daryl Enstone

"The Kerry Blue Terrier (also known as the Irish Blue Terrier in Ireland) is one of three closely related, long legged, all purpose working terriers which were distilled from the great mixture of coat colours, textures and dispositions that were found throughout the Irish countryside over the last few centuries. The Kerry's two Irish cousins are the Irish terrier and the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier; the latter is often considered an ancestor of the Kerry Blue."

Subjects covered include description of the breed, history, characteristics and temperament, care & training, medical problems and references.

The Kerry Blue Terrier: from Ireland, with love

"The Kerry Blue Terrier is a large terrier breed that was developed as an all purpose, working farm dog in Ireland. It is closely related to the Irish Terrier and the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, and is believed to have Irish Wolfhound, Black and Tan Terrier (a now extinct terrier breed), and possibly some Poodle or similar breed, spaniel, and herding breed ancestry. Years of selective breeding have produced an intelligent, athletic dog that has been called "a canine Jack-of-all-trades and a master at most." In their native Ireland, they were expected to hunt, herd, guard, retrieve, and go to ground, all as part of a day's work."

An excellent and very comprehensive site. Highly recommended. While worth the time it takes to check it out. In addition to the usual history of the breed, FAQs (in eight different languages!), grooming tips (both pet and show grooming!), and health care that one would expect on a good site, there are also sections on all types of training, advice for would be Kerry breeders, lots of advice for puppy buyers, Kerry stories, Kerry jokes, Kerry poems, a Kerry flea market, lots of information on Kerry rescue, a very comprehensive list of resources and a link to the official web site of the United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club. No matter what you are looking for to do with Kerries you will find it on this site.
